Molly Segal’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, Marrow Sucker, presents watercolor paintings on paper depicting oil fields, fires, sinkholes, bones, thistles, and migrating birds punctuating landscapes depleted and scarred by industry and drought. With figurative works largely muted in palette, Segal reveals hidden beauty in her dystopian visions while with other more abstracted figures in brighter hues, she explores the human psyche as it grapples with surrounding devastation. What is the Marrow Sucker? According to Segal “there is something both decadent and desperate about sucking the marrow. It’s squeezing every pleasure out of life while literally picking at bones, sucking them dry.”

Molly Segal (b. 1983, Oakland, CA) received an MFA from The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in 2013. Her paintings have appeared in group exhibitions at Charlie James Gallery, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, PØST, Northeastern University, and Zevitas Marcus. Her work and writing have been featured in publications Full Blede, Venison Quarterly, Beautiful Decay, and Lapham’s Quarterly. Segal has taught courses in painting and drawing at CSU Long Beach, Tufts University, SMFA, and currently teaches at Golden West College. She lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

In a city rapidly attracting talented artists, Luna Anaïs gives platform to those it sees are on the verge of wider recognition. The gallery started amidst the adversity of 2020 with the aim of making sure artists in our community continue to thrive as we explore new models for connecting the public and collectors to the excellent contemporary artwork coming out of the Los Angeles area.
