Important African Art
Feb 9 – Mar 25, 2023
Important African Art features several very fine and important objects from West and Central Africa. Age, provenance and artistic merit are the common denominators of the pieces selected.
Among the highlights are a Mossi Karanga mask, Yatenga style, formerly in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Thomas G.B. Wheelock collection; a Kota reliquary figure mounted on a Kichizô Inagaki base, previously owned by Curt Valentin and Klaus Perls; a masterpiece of Angolan art, the Jernander Lwena mask; and the expressive and rare de Havenon We/Guere Mask.
