I walked on with a pounding heart, my throat dry, and so perfect around me was the silence of the stones, so compact the ringing frost of that blue night, so puzzling my footsteps which seemed to float just above the cobblestones, that I felt I was walking through the bizarre decoration and the bewildering lighting of an empty theater—but a harsh echo dogged my way for a long while and ricocheted against the house fronts, a footstep finally fulfilled the expectations of that empty night, and from now on I knew what the stage was set for.
