Brooklyn College MFA Thesis Exhibition
Possible as a Pair of Shoes
Apr 25 – May 4, 2014
Fifteen candidates from Brooklyn College’s Master of Fine Arts program present a collection of their graduate work in Possible as a Pair of Shoes, the 2014 Thesis Exhibition, from April 25 through May 4 at Showroom Gowanus. The exhibit’s opening reception will be held on Friday, April 25 from 6 until 9pm.
A culmination of two rigorous years’ studio practice, the show includes a variety of media — Paintings, sculptures, photographs, digital videos, ceramics, and installations will be on display, along with performances and ongoing events at the gallery to coincide with the exhibit’s themes.
Sharon Butler – painter, professor, and art blogger at Two Coats of Paint – curates the show. Butler’s catalog essay considers diverse themes in the group’s work, ranging ”from political activism, biology, and the tension between physical presence and online space, to more personal approaches that explore memory, process, and emotional experience.” Her essay, along with one by MFA faculty member Vito Acconci, and statements from all fifteen artists are printed in the show’s catalog, and available to view at the exhibit.
Many thanks to Brooklyn College’s MFA faculty and staff: Vito Acconci, Jennifer Ball, Arnold Brooks, Janet Carlile, Mike Cloud, Georgeen Comerford, Edward Coppola, Patricia Cronin, Kathleen Gilrain, Karin Giusti, Mona Hadler, James Hyde, Stephen Keltner, Ronaldo Kiel (Graduate Deputy), Lauren Kilroy, Rachel Kousser, David Lantow, Michael Mallory (Chair), Stephen Margolies, Jennifer McCoy, Mitch Patrick, Florence Poulain, Archie Rand, Doug Schwab, Malka Simon, Kathleen Smith, and Adam Thompson.
