Domestic (2): Three Stars in the Sky

There was melancholy and dread all around. The grandparents kept saying maybe it is time to move from this place while we watched the demolition of the East Wing. Feminism seems dead, and everyone is fixated on a deflated art market, like a shrivelled balloon. Paper cups and plastic lids came back during Covid, and now they pile up in the car. I tried to explain to my kids why the national guard was in Portland, and we watched some protestors do a flash mob online.

I've been talking with my daughter about Radical Amazement, about spirituality as a kind of optimism. We watched the sun raking through the windows, and making shapes and large swaths of light across the chairs, rug and floor. Her brother uncharacteristically languid in his seat, slowed by the thick, warm honey of the sun. Like a cat, studying tiny particles of dust suspended in gilded air. The dust bunnies were nearly celestial. There were a couple dead flies in the windowsill, and a too-warm fall breeze being churned by a fan.

This is the second show in a domestic space that we now share with a small, quiet bunny named Tirimisu. She lives in a Greek Revival dollhouse with us. Her family decided to pull the plug, and they moved across the pond.

This is an exhibition about dust, dogs, psychedelia, religion, ritual, longing and domestic surrealism – the insane everyday – the mysteries of hidden rose apples, the flavor and texture of a persimmon, loss and impossible connections.
