Becky Howland

Moiety presents Weeds Of New York, the first solo exhibition of paintings by Becky Howland, curated by James Michael Shaeffer, Jr.

Becky Howland is a sculptor and painter based in New York City. In 1980, she co-organized “The Real Estate Show,” which occupied an abandoned building on Delancey Street. The ensuing clash with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development led to the establishment of ABC No Rio, a community center for art and activism. As one of the original co-organizers of ABC No Rio, Howland helped develop exhibitions and performances, including “The Island Show” (1981), exploring the shared insularity of Manhattan, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic; and “The Williamsburg Bridge Show” (1983), a large-scale sculpture show installed on the bridge’s promenade. She served as President of Colab (Collaborative Projects, Inc.) from 1982 to 1983.

Howland received an MFA from Bard College, a BFA from Syracuse University (with one year in Japan) and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program. She has exhibited at venues including Artists Space, Fashion Moda, The New Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, Piezo Electric Gallery, P.S.1, White Columns, James Fuentes Gallery, Freddy Gallery, Know More Games, and Still House Projects in Brooklyn.
