Nicolas Rule

The Mitchell Algus Gallery presents a selection of paintings and drawings by Nicolas Rule, made in the 1990s through this year.

According to the artist “This selection of work includes early paintings of lineages of thorough- bred horses, which highlight patriarchy, patronage and privilege. Later paintings include listings of phobias generated by the question, if a painting described itself in terms of neuroses, what would they be? The most recent work is probably influenced by my relocation to the woodlands and mountains of the Hudson Valley after 30 years living and working in downtown New York City.”

Nicolas Rule was born in Birmingham UK in 1956 and emigrated in 1983 to attend Queens College where he recieved his MFA. He has had one person shows with Nicole Klagsburn (1990, 1991), Paul Kasmin (1994) and Ingrid Dinter (2007, 2009). Rule has appeared in many group exhibitions including shows at the Tony Shafrazi, Annina Nosei, Greenberg Gallery (St. Louis), Weatherspoon Gallery (Greensboro, NC), Esso Gallery (New York), Max Protetch (New York), White Columns. The artist currently lives and works in Beacon, NY.
