About the show
In June 1981, writing about a new series of objects she had begun making for her home, Niki de Saint Phalle described her lamps as “objects to be tamed.” Seeing three of her iconic light sculptures together, it is apparent that Saint Phalle’s work defies domestication. The three works on display, including Ω (Omega), a monumental collaboration with her friend the artist Pierre-Marie Lejeune, show light as a recurring subject across Saint Phalle’s sculpture: the functional object as inhabited figure, the source of light as the body of a goddess, the domestic interior as a space in which mythology continues to be lived.
