Juliana Huxtable

Project Native Informant is pleased to present Juliana Huxtable's third solo exhibition at the gallery. Heads & Tails in the Struggle for Iconicity expands on the universe Huxtable previously created for her eponymous show Akimbo Spittle in 2022.

Huxtable disrupts the consolidation and static understandings of identity, representation and futurity. In a language of amorphicity, her celebrated practice - often collapsing painting, photography, text, performance and music - resides in semantic slippages, defying the didactic rubrics that attempt to define gender and race.

As Roisin Tapponi noted in Artforum: 'The encounter between the human and the bestial on the level of Huxtable’s body draws attention to the limits of identity in the stories society tells itself. Centering herself in these paintings formally and conceptually, the artist mythologizes her own image, using themes of futurity to recast the presiding narratives about the bodies we inhabit'.

In the new body of work Huxtable broadens the cast of characters that populate the canvases. From the exploration of her own image in Akimbo Spittle, Huxtable here takes the work a step further; an exercise in world building if you will, resulting in a universe of her own creation.

Her works and performances have been presented internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Hayward Gallery, London, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Brooklyn Museum, New York, Institute for Contemporary Art, Boston, MoMA PS1, New York and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
