In I Ching (Book of Changes), an ancient Chinese divination text, changes are interpreted as the transformations of hexagrams, of their lines, or of the numbers obtained by chance.

Michael Childress’ work is brought into focus by the writings Hexagram 1 – the Creative. Composed of only unbroken lines, it references a notion of “generative power,” and by coincidence the spring season.

This work, from Childress’ Changing Painting series is capable of shifting its composition – it will flow into other forms. Just in the way the Creative is empowered through change and transformation, Childress’ work may transform depending on the situation to complement its environment.
