Rumpelstiltskin is pleased to present The Movielife, a selection of sound recordings, sculpture, drawing, and painting. The interplay of artworks extends an immersive, fabricated world where pictorial sequences are colored by atmospheric lighting with mercurial resonance. To varying degrees, the contents of the work reflect the stuff of movies: on one wall, a giant ape hangs beside panels of depersonalized teenage sexual trauma; elsewhere, a celebrity’s likeness is interspersed across a reel of framed image constructions. Other cinematic notes pepper the space, with tokens of devotion adorned in costumier sequins and shelves of mancala-like puzzles signaling a tactical logic. From the corners of the gallery, a 4-channel composition emits noise and music, ensconcing parts of the room in warmth while destabilizing others. Less a set for unwitting actors, so much as a theater with candy in the aisles, The MovieLife sets the stage for an imaginal realm.
