In the intricate spaces of the basement, Schinkel Pavillon presents Ɛցɾҽցօɾҽʂ & 𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗠𝗢𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦, the first institutional solo exhibition by Jon Rafman (born 1981 in Montreal) in Berlin. The title of the exhibition is derived from the language of Magick by Aleister Crowley, in which a Grimoire is a book of spells and Egregore refers to an occult concept according to which a non-physical entity that comes from the collective unconscious takes on a life of its own. The artist's latest video works take us deep into the trials and tribulations of the human psyche, which threaten to get lost in the endless vastness of the World Wide Web.

Jon Rafman (b. 1981) is a Canadian, Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker known for his multi-media practice encompassing video, animation, photography, sculpture and installation. One of the key voices emerging from the post-internet moment, Rafman’s work explores subjects of fantasy, world building, online subcultures, and the virtual world of gaming. Taking inspiration from the web’s deeper and darker fringes, he explores the influence of the internet and its effects on our human consciousness and psyche, in both the dual-sense of community and alienation it exacerbates.

Im den verschlungenen Räumen des Untergeschosses präsentiert der Schinkel Pavillon mit Ɛցɾҽցօɾҽʂ & 𝗚𝗥𝗜𝗠𝗢𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦 die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung von Jon Rafman (geb. 1981 in Montreal) in Berlin. Der Titel der Ausstellung leitet sich aus der Sprache der Magick von Aleister Crowley ab, in welcher ein Grimoire ein Zauberbuch ist und Egregore auf ein okkultes Konzept referiert, nach welchem eine nicht-physische Entität, die aus dem kollektiven Unbewussten kommt, ein Eigenleben annimmt. Die neusten Videoarbeiten des Künstlers führen tief hinein in die Irrungen und Wirrungen der menschlichen Psyche, die sich in den endlosen Weiteren des World Wide Web zu verlieren drohen.

Jon Rafman (geb. 1981) ist ein kanadischer, in Los Angeles lebender Künstler und Filmemacher, der für seine multimediale Praxis—die Video, Animation, Fotografie, Skulptur und Installation umspannt—bekannt ist. Rafman, der eine herausragende Position der Post-Internet-Art einnimmt, erforscht in seinen Arbeiten unter anderem digitale Subkulturen und jene virtuelle Welt, in die Gamer*innen dutzende Stunden entgleiten. Auf der Spur der verborgenen Struktur des Internets bewegt Rafmans künstlerische Praxis die Reproduktion des algorithmischen Codes, der in das Unbewusste der menschlichen Psyche sickert und Symptome wie physische Entfremdung generiert.
