Sam Cooke

Mery Gates is pleased to present Ecce Puella, a solo exhibition of new sculptures by Sam Cooke. The show summons the weight of the gaze—the body as spectacle, as relic, as ornament. Cooke’s figures exist on the threshold of the sacred and the profane, teasing at the space between revelation and parody. Is this an invocation or an exorcism? A martyrdom, or something closer to a joke? The work doesn’t resolve itself neatly. Instead, it lingers—glistening, cracking, shifting under its own weight.

Sam Cooke (b. 1991, Paris, France) lives and works in New York. His work has been exhibited at Interstate Projects, Jack Barrett Gallery, Mery Gates, O’Flaherty’s, 393 NYC, and MX Gallery, among others. His poetry has appeared in New York Tyrant, Hobart Pulp, Spectra Poets, and Logue Magazine.
