Mónika Kárándi

Another Gallery LA is pleased to present Look at Where We Are by Mónika Kárándi, her first solo exhibition in the U.S.

Look at Where We Are illustrates Kárándi’s relationship to sentience. Memories distorted over time can be paralleled with the represented creatures. The resulting surreal world mirrors Kárándi’s attitude for both life and art. Kárándi represents the fallible nature of consciousness through the creatures in her paintings. The vastness of the desert engulfs everything but her amorphous personifications of life in Kárándi’s dystopia. Surreal, mystical, and resilient, these creatures find a way to seep through.

A preoccupation with an enchanting plant found in the Namib Desert inspires Mónika Kárándi’s Look at Where We Are. Found on the west coast of South Africa, the Welwitschia Mirabilis serves as a muse for Kárándi’s expression of the human experience. The plant contains two continuously growing seedlings, and instead of seeking outward, the plant continuously, and patiently, collapses on itself in order to reproduce – a process that can take centuries to complete. The plant which looks inward to create life is as mystical as it is resilient; it is as lonely as it is full. The dystopian, but serene, plane the artist has created is constructed from its nature. These extinct, meaty landscapes dominate the field of the picture, but with the entities inside, there will be life.
