Nicole Phungrasamee Fein & Dean Smith

This October, curator and Volume member Jared Baxter will take over the apartment with a rigorous program of readings, live performances, sound installations and spatial reconstructions which will run concurrently with Haunted Formalism, an exhibition of new works by Bay Area artists Nicole Phungrasamee Fein and Dean Smith. I am thrilled to share with you the schedule of events below. More details will follow in the forthcoming weeks.

Both artists will be presenting work that marks a significant departure from their previous practices, with Fein pursuing forms that are darker and more complex - though no less carefully controlled - than her earlier watercolors, and Smith eschewing the accumulative processes that typified his circle and intooutof & focusing drawings in favor of sharply reduced and rigorously interrelated series of compositions in graphite.

The show will be accompanied by a full-color exhibition catalog designed by Impossible Void with contributions from curator Jared Baxter, the award-winning poet and translator Norma Cole, and Bay Area author M Kitchell.

Del Vaz is an apartment gallery, and in homage to the notorious predilection of ghosts for rearranging objects in domestic spaces, the show will be completely rehung every Thursday, presenting a total of 27 works over the course of its three-week run.

This will also mark Volume's second residency project, and they will presenting an event every Friday and Sunday for the duration of the exhibition. The upcoming program will take full advantage of the possibilities of working in an apartment gallery to offer a unique series of intimate experiences designed for a small audience. These events will explore the theme of haunting not just as an irreducible ambivalence between life and death, but in the broader sense of works and practices that exist between and confound ostensibly contradictory binary categories, such as that of performer and audience, virtual and real, and even time and space.
