Tobias Møhl

Heller presents the final exhibition of our summer Rotations series showcasing the work of Danish artist & designer Tobias Møhl. It features new and recent examples of his Black Twill and Silk Spinner installations, as well as individual objects from the Black Twill, Silk Spinner and Glass Weaver series.

Recognized throughout the international glass community as one of the outstanding talents of the 21st century, Tobias Møhl, began his journey with glass at the age of seventeen, when he entered the training program at Homegaard Glassworks, a Danish company founded in 1825, and became a certified Master at the age of 21. But it was his encounter with legendary Italian glassblower Lino Tagliapietra that ignited his passion for traditional Italian glassblowing. More than twenty years of daily work in the hotshop, exploring every iteration of Italian glass cane techniques, until they became second nature to him, allowed him to eventually develop his own vocabulary.

Combining his extraordinary technical mastery of a historically Italian glassmaking idiom with a native Scandinavian inclination for the austere, Møhl produces objects of unparalleled finesse. The New York Times critic Roberta Smith praised them, when she wrote that ‘the work of Tobias Møhl impresses sotto voce, with small bowls crisscrossed with infinitesimal threads of color.’

Tobias Møhl’s work has been featured as a finalist in the 2021 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, in the New Glass Review, Glass Quarterly & the New York Times and is held in more than a dozen public collections including the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; Memorial Art Museum, Rochester, NY; Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany; and The Danish Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as in numerous private and corporate collections in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. A studio artist and teacher, he works and resides in Denmark.
