Shimabuku

In Self Portrait, Shimabuku‘s third solo exhibition with Galerie Barbara Wien, a selection of his conceptual works, spanning the years 1991 to 2023, is on view. Starting with the black and white photograph Tour of Europe with One Eyebrow Shaved (1991), the exhibited artworks – photographs accompanied by text, a slideshow presented as a video, two sound installations and a participatory piece – are often connected to specific moments and places in the artist‘s life.

Shimabuku (b. 1969, Kobe, Japan) is an artist renowned for his experimental and innovative works, based on his own curiosity. His creations often evolve through various adaptations, through which he explores new contexts and ideas. In 1999, he held his first solo exhibition in Europe at Air de Paris. During this period, he met artists and theorists such as Philippe Parreno, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Nicolas Bourriaud, with whom he is in a dialogue until today.
