Amanda Baldwin

106 Green is pleased to present The Rest of the Crowd, a solo show by Amanda Baldwin.

Amanda Baldwin’s paintings are composed of highly rendered geometric forms, patterned textiles, and layered flat surfaces. They play optical games with our sense of a two-dimensional field and the illusion of three-dimensional depth. She intentionally disrupts the structure of a grid by implying an almost random arrangement. With a closer look, highly orchestrated relationships and spaces emerge. Objects sink below and float above the surface, casting shadows and fluctuating optically between patterned fields and more open spaces. Clarity of light, straight forward presentation, and systematic rendering quietly shift in unexpected, surreal ways. Even when crystalized in paint, they feel simultaneously still and on the verge of movement. Their familiarity brings to mind a table top, perhaps from a desk or a sewing room. If they are naturalistic interior scenes, the moments within are unfixed, organic, and fleeting. If they are abstractions, their realism invites you back in for more.

"I am interested in many formal aspects of painting but also in creating unexpected patterned spaces with various shapes that dance around and interact with each other. In the studio, this is a physical process with fabric and other material objects that at some point find themselves frozen and rendered on canvas."

Amanda Baldwin was born in Seattle, WA and currently lives and works in Queens, NY. She received her MFA from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 2012. Her work has been included in shows at White Box Gallery, Brennan & Griffin, Art in General, NY and at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Seattle, and Mint Gallery, Atlanta.
