TT Cut .002/Here. Tyrant Death/Look Backward, Idiot
Apr 29 – Apr 29
About the show
In the TT basement, Mildenberg offers an introduction to the practice of Cryogenics, offering information about the state of the technology and the philosophies that support the ethics surrounding the practice.
TT Cut .002 is the second work in a curatorial project with guest curator Erin Henry that results from the archeological project of gallery founder, Anna Mendes. Mendes’s work is deeply engaged with portraiture by way of a methodology of detached devotion; a system of practices through which it becomes possible for one to slip into the impression left in the wake of a body that is no longer there. The gallery itself emerged as a second movement to the process of indexing and archiving the extensive collection of personal effects inherited by what would become Treasure Town, in the wake of the departure of N. Green from the storefront, backyard, and basement of 624 Myrtle Ave.
TT Cuts .001 - .004 develop and expand on these methodologies, shifting the subject of portraiture from those who have occupied this place to the site as it exists in the moment, producing in the wake of a moment that is no longer there a body of information that is not an image of the past, but an impression directly inscribed in it.
Here, Tyrant Death / Look Backward, Idiot
The work’s proposal is that death is not an inevitable part of the our biology. Death, rather, is a current condition which will inevitably be transcended as technology and human knowledge develops. Here, Tyrant Death finds no meaning in death itself. Here, the only true death is information-death; this is death’s death. That which is left over is rendered a useless waste of matter and energy. Meat.
Only the eternal will suffice - an ageless future utopia which only looks forward. Behind you is everything you love, and eventually you will lose it all. What is proposed, then, is faith - not in God, but in ourselves. Just hold on tight enough, for long enough.
Hold steady, you pioneer. you idiot.
