Elena Redmond

Another Gallery LA is pleased to present Frenemies by Elena Redmond, courtesy of Tchotchke Gallery.

In this series of four paintings, aptly titled Frenemies, Redmond presents self-portraiture alongside and intertwined with infamous pop culture references from recent years. She explores themes of privacy, desire, vulnerability and power through a multi-layered oil painting practice. This focus and practice is scrutinized by the artist’s investigation into virality and the unforgettable nature of the Internet Age.

“With these works, I wanted to explore how media exposure can skew our perception of what friendship means and the effect modern influences may have on such relationships. For example, with reality television and digital accessibility, celebrities and other public figures can subconsciously influence what we should expect, what we should be given, and our roles in general as ‘friend of’. In turn, this subjection alters how we view ourselves in terms of interrelationality, even while we are alone,” notes the artist.

Frenemies analyzes relationships presented and the archival and connective nature of the Internet, which has ultimately created minimal dissonance between social media and the viewer. Redmond embeds herself within her recreations of iconic and unforgettable moments of pop culture and reality TV, shrinking the gap further. With this approach, she examines her afflictions and affection towards growing up online, questioning predominantly where the body stops and the internet begins.

Elena Redmond (b. 1998, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) uses self-portraiture to explore themes of privacy, desire, vulnerability and power through a multi-layered oil painting practice. With this approach, she examines her afflictions and affection towards growing up online, questioning predominantly where the body stops and the internet begins.

After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2021, the artist relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she currently resides.
