Paul Chan

A Drawing as a Recording of an Insurrection

Jan 6 – Feb 19, 2022

More from Paul Chan on Gallop

Over the course of a week in early 2021, Paul Chan made a sprawling, double-sided drawing in response to the events of January 6th. In this monumental work on paper, a weeping sun and moon hover above the US Capitol, mid-insurrection. A devilish figure blows a strong gust of wind that spurs on the violent crowd, as rioters trample the flimsy barricades—and one another—underfoot. Chan made the mural-scaled drawing as a means not only of documenting the day itself, but also the experience of watching it unfold across countless screens and streaming platforms.

The work’s public debut marks the one-year anniversary of the storming of the Capitol. Voter registration for US residents will also be conducted onsite during the run of the show.

Paul Chan lives and works in New York. His work will be the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis in November 2022. Other recent solo exhibitions include Greene Naftali, New York (2020, 2019, 2017); Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens (2018); Remai Modern, Saskatoon (2018); Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia (2017); Deste Foundation Project Space, Slaughterhouse, Hydra (2015); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2015); Schaulager, Basel (2014); The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Chicago (2009); New Museum, New York (2008); and Serpentine Gallery, London (2007). He was the recipient of the Hugo Boss Prize in 2014.
