"Biology and evolutionary theory over the past two centuries have simultaneously produced modern organisms as objects of knowledge and reduced the line between humans and animals...".

The quote from the now classic A Cyborg Manifesto (1985) by biologist and feminist Donna Haraway can easily become the motto of Katarzyna Kozyra’s upcoming exhibition at Żak Branicka Gallery. The show features two photographic series presented alongside the artist’s latest video, from which the exhibition title originates. A Dream of Linnaeus’ Daughter was shot in Uppsala, in the gardens of Carl Linnaeus a botanist considered to be the father of modern taxonomy. Kozyra acts as Elisabeth Christina von Linné, one of Linnaeus’ five daughters, an exceptionally talented figure forgotten by history, who as a woman could never take up studies, but still followed the steps of her father and became a botanist. In Kozyra’s interpretation, Elisabeth conducts a choir singing Ludwig van Beethoven’s famous Ode to Joy (the Anthem of the European Union) but... with the voices of such animals as a dog, donkey, cow, horse, goat or monkey.

Dieses Zitat aus dem heute mittlerweile klassischen Text Ein Manifest für Cyborgs (1985) der Biologin und Feministin Donna Haraway eignet sich hervorragend als Leitmotto zur neuesten Ausstellung von Katarzyna Kozyra in der Galerie Żak Branicka. Die Ausstellung verbindet zwei Serien von Fotoarbeiten mit der jüngsten Videoarbeit der Künstlerin, von der auch der Ausstellungstitel abgeleitet wurde. Der Traum von Linnés Tochter entstand in Uppsala, in den nach Linné benannten Gärten. Der berühmte schwedische Botaniker gilt als Autor der modernen botanischen und zoologischen Taxonomie. Katarzyna Kozyra versetzte sich in ihrer Arbeit in die jüngste von Linnés fünf Töchtern: Elisabeth Christina von Linné, eine überaus begabte, doch von der Geschichte vergessene Linné-Tochter, die nie studieren durfte, doch trotzdem in die Fußstapfen ihres Vaters trat und Botanikerin wurde. In Kozyras Interpretation dirigiert Elisabeth einen Chor, der Ludwig van Beethovens berühmte Ode an die Freude (die Hymne der Europäischen Union) aufführt ... doch die Stimmen stammen von Tieren – Hund, Esel, eine Kuh, ein Pferd, eine Ziege oder ein Affe.
