Abelardo Morell

Edwynn Houk Gallery is pleased to present Abelardo Morell: Out of Paper, In Dialogue with Gene Davis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski & Larry Poons, Morell's sixth exhibition with the gallery and the first time the gallery has presented painting alongside photography. The show presents Morell's newest works, in which he uses the camera to push beyond representation and inquire into color, form, and abstraction, in the tradition of the painters he counts among his influences. Four exemplary paintings by Davis, Noland, Olitski, and Poons hang alongside the photographs, offering a direct view of the material and ideas Morell has carried into his own medium.

Abelardo Morell was born in Havana, Cuba in 1948, and immigrated to the United States in 1962. His honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), the ICP Infinity Award (2011), and a Lucie Award for achievement in fine art (2017). The Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty in Los Angeles, and the High Museum in Atlanta jointly organized and presented a retrospective of his work, traveling from 2013 to 2014. His work is collected and shown in museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Victoria and Albert Museum; and others in the United States and abroad. In 2023, his Tent-Camera work made in U.S. National Parks traveled the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the de Young Museum, San Francisco; and the Crystal Bridges Museum, Bentonville. In fall 2024, a selection of his Tent-Camera work made in England and France was shown at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
