Żak Branicka is delighted to present Firm Foundations by Jasmina Cibic, this will be the artist’s first solo presentation in Berlin and the beginning of her cooperation with the gallery.

Cibic’s work seeks to establish dialogues between politically latent objects from diverse historical or linguistic and media spaces. Hers is a practice that addresses the ways in which visual language, art, architecture, and rhetoric are deployed and instrumentalised by political regimes, before investigating what happens to these fragments when the ideologies they endorse collapse.

Works from the series Architect's Silhouette and Instructions, as well as the video work The Pavillion, the performative installation The Land In Which a Wide Space For National Progress Is Ensured and the sculptures that make up Firm Foundations, gesture towards the latent performative potential of props, backgrounds and scenographic elements drawn from the history of modern nation building. By turning the exhibition space into an expanded film or theatrical set, Cibic draws parallels between the construction of national culture and its use-value for political aims, embedding historical references and ready-mades as diverse as nationally representative aesthetics, architecture and cultural propaganda.

Gathering together these symbols and iconographies, Cibic’s projects present a synthesis of gesture, stagecraft and re-enactment. Instantiated in films and installations, hers is also an ongoing performative practice, an ‘enacted’ exercise in the dissection of statecraft.

In Ihren Arbeiten sucht Cibic die Schaffung eines Dialog zwischen verborgenen politischen Objekten diverser historischer, sprachlicher oder medialer Räume. In ihrer Praxis thematisiert sie verschiedene Arten, wie Bildsprache, Kunst, Architektur und Rhetorik von politischen Regimen eingesetzt und instrumentalisiert werden, und untersucht, was mit diesen Fragmenten geschieht, wenn die durch sie gestützten Ideologien zusammenbrechen.

In ihrem Zusammenspiel verweisen die Arbeiten (wie Serie Instructions, die performative Installation The Land In Which a Wide Space For National Progress is Ensured und Skulpturen) die sich in Firm Foundations vereinen, auf das latente performative Potential von Requisiten, Hintergründen und szenografischen Elementen, die aus der Geschichte der modernen Nationenbildung abgeleitet sind. Indem sie den Ausstellungsraum in ein erweitertes Film- oder Bühnenset verwandelt, zieht Cibic Parallelen zwischen der Konstruktion nationaler Kultur und ihrem Nutzwert für politische Ziele, wobei sie historische Referenzen und ready-mades vielfältig in den Kontext national-repräsentativer Ästhetik, Architektur und kultureller Propaganda einbettet.

Cibics Projekte, die diese Symbole und Ikonographien zusammenführen, sind eine Synthese von Gestik, Bühnenkunst und Reenactment. Ihre Praxis, in Filmen und Installationen instanziiert, ist auch eine laufend performative, eine aufgeführte Übung im Sezieren von Bühnenkunst.
