VNH Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by Tal R, entitled Pink Road Through Forest comprising a body of works mounted around an inspirational art brut painting the artist came upon a few years ago.

Visual theory takes the idea that the viewer participates in the image thus it is built through a communicative form of art. Using a great variety of mediums from sculpture and paintings to drawings or textile, Tal R adds this intricacy in his works by indeed questioning our conceptions and presumptions of our surrounding reality which frustrates the extraction of a coherent worldview.

First known for flamboyant colors and expansive imagery paintings, Tal R plants various strategic challenges to the viewer’s education such as the knowledge of perspective and reflection, defying the narrative solely based on what we know and what we see. From an image encountered two years ago, Tal R mounted an exhibition around the pursuit of a spiritual path each one of us needs to find, illustrated by a pink road crossing a forest.

When entering the gallery, the visitor is first stroke by the immense fabric piece standing up in the middle of the room. Built as a patchwork of textiles, this work stands as a pink wall to dominate before entering the main space where a second obstacle awaits. Indeed, bending is required in order to enter the glass skylight room as a wooden plinth drastically shortens the entrance’s height.

Presented chronologically as the twelve months of the year, the paintings here shown all depict a pink field cutting the canvas in two and sometimes morphing into an internal frame and containing the image inside a rectangular border, connecting the bottom and the top of the canvas. While crossing a forest which progressively fades away from image to language as it transforms into symbols, the pink road would really represent a spiritual road each one has to find in order to find our way through the forest the character depicted in the black and white drawings struggles so much going through, disappearing into it every time he tries.

At the center of the room thrones a large pedestal where eighty-three lino prints produced over a year and a half are described by the artist as surgery works somewhere between image and language, mirroring the symbols moving through the paintings, making them differ from their initial narrative by crawling into language.

For Tal R, this exhibition was mounted as a journey the viewer must go through in order to find your own mythical pink road, arguing the price for such a reward is quite reasonable when reaching the possibility of such a path is one of the most hazardous challenges of all.

Tal R was born in 1967 in Tel Aviv (Israel).

He currently lives and works in Copenhagen (Denmark).

La théorie visuelle reprend l’idée selon laquelle le spectateur participe à l’image, se construisant alors à travers une forme communicative de l’art. Utilisant une grande variété de médiums allant de la sculpture à la peinture en passant par le dessin ou le textile, Tal R ajoute cette complexité à son travail en questionnant ainsi nos conceptions et nos présomptions sur notre réalité environnante, frustrant l’extraction d’une vision du monde cohérente.

Premièrement connu pour ses peintures aux couleurs flamboyantes et à l’imagerie exubérante, Tal R implante des challenges stratégiques variés destinés à l’éducation même du spectateur comme l’appréhension de la perspective et de la réflexion, défiant la narration fondée seulement sur ce que nous savons et ce que nous voyons. À partir d’une image trouvée il y a deux ans, Tal R a construit une exposition autour de la poursuite d’un chemin spirituel que chacun doit trouver, illustré par une route rose traversant une forêt.

En pénétrant la galerie, le visiteur est d’abord surpris par l’immense pièce de tissu s’élevant au milieu de la pièce. Conçue sous la forme d’un patchwork de textiles, cette œuvre tient comme un mur rose qu’il faut dominer avant d’entrer dans l’espace principal où un deuxième obstacle nous attend. En effet, il faudra se pencher afin de pénétrer au sein de la salle sous verrière dont une plinthe de bois abaisse drastiquement la hauteur de l’entrée.

Présentés chronologiquement comme les douze mois de l’année, les peintures exposées ici dépeignent toutes un champ rose coupant la toile en deux, se transformant parfois en cadre interne contenant l’image au sein d’une bordure rectangulaire et connectant ainsi le haut et le bas de la toile. Alors qu’elle traverse une forêt s’effaçant progressivement, passant d’image à langage pour devenir symboles, la route rose représenterait finalement une route spirituelle que chacun doit trouver afin de traverser une forêt si difficile à vaincre si on en croit le personnage illustré dans les dessins en noir et blanc qui y disparaît à chacune de ses tentatives.

Au centre de la pièce trône un large piédestal où quatre-vingt-trois lino gravures réalisées sur un an et demi sont décrites par l’artiste comme des travaux chirurgicaux se situant quelque part entre image et langage, reflétant les symboles se déplaçant à travers les peintures, les détournant de leur narration initiale en devenant langage.

Pour Tal R, cette exposition a été pensée comme un périple que le spectateur doit suivre afin de trouver sa propre route rose mythique, argumentant que le prix d’une telle récompense est bien raisonnable compte tenu qu’atteindre un tel chemin constitue le plus hasardeux des défis.
