Huguette Caland, Sarah Dwyer, Rosa Loy, Dannielle Tegeder

Lombard Freid Gallery is pleased to present works by Huguette Caland, Sarah Dwyer, Rosa Loy, and Dannielle Tegeder. These artists represent a range of cultural backgrounds and artistic tradition. Personal subjectivity and historical abstraction play equal roles in their oeuvres.

Huguette Caland (b. 1931, Lebanon) began her career in the early 1960s with erotic abstract paintings and body landscapes and continued to explore the body in a free- spirited way throughout the seventies when she had relocated to Paris. There she collaborated with renowned poets and artists such as Adonis, Georges Apostu and Pierre Cardin. Caland eventually moved to Venice, California in 1987, where her work progressed across a wide range of medium, with her most recent canvases reflecting distorted distance and layered memory, with a playful modernist abstraction. Her work is included in private and public collections across the Middle East, Europe and the US.

Sarah Dwyer’s (b. 1974, Ireland) historically imbued portraits reveal traces of memory and fragments of found imagery, resulting in unpredictable forms and mark-making. Possessing elements of both figuration and abstraction, they are a result of an intimate relationship between the act of painting, the unconscious, and intuition. An internal dialogue plays out resulting in an uncertain psychological narrative. Reduction and erasure play as much a part as application and layer; her line meanders over quick, loose gestures and refined shapes, which are both whimsical and ephemeral. Canvases are worked and reworked, retaining something of the paintings past, building up multiple layers of paint in some areas while others reveal raw linen.

Dwyer earned a Master’s in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2004 after an MFA from Straffordshire University in 2001. Solo exhibitions include Josh Lilley Gallery, London; Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin; Kybidou Gallery, Tokyo. Dwyer lives and works in London. Recent group shows include New Order: British Art Today, Saatchi Gallery, London and Fade Away (Touring exhibition), Transition Gallery, London.

Rosa Loy (b. 1958, Germany) is one of few women artists associated with the New Leipzig School, a contemporary German painting movement. Her figurative works are dreamlike and intimate approaches to memory, nostalgia, and myth. The paintings navigate between folklore and realism, surrealism and Freudianism, signifying both nonfictional experience and imagined narratives which often feature dopplegängers whose relationship is ambiguous.

Major solo exhibitions include Städtische Museum Zwickau, Germany; Kunstverein Elsterpark E.V., Germany; VEAG Förderpreis für Kunst, Germany; and Kunstverein der Stadt, Germany. Rosa Loy lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.

Dannielle Tegeder (b. 1971, Peekskill, New York) uses linear, geometric abstraction to explore a complex network of internal and external systems. Tegeder’s work acknowledges a historical influence while re- contextualizing and re-imagining connectedness in the digital age. She investigates the charting and plotting of information, visualizing matrices that draw from architectural renderings, urban planning maps, and the practice of automatic drawing.

Dannielle Tegeder received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She recently inaugurated the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, with the museum’s first solo exhibition, Painting in the Extended Field, and has participated in group exhibitions in major institutions such as PS1/MoMA, The New Museum, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Artist’s Space. She has been the recipient of numerous residencies and grants, including The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The Fulbright Scholar Grant, and a Smack Mellon fellowship. She lives and works in New York City.
