Another Gallery LA is pleased to present Incendiary by S.H. Kim.

Born in South Korea, with familial links to Japan and the United States, Kim synthesizes the horror, beauty, and ultimate collision of his many backgrounds through his art. This series of seven paintings are his memories of childhood as well as the historical and cultural conflicts he experiences in the contemporary world. Oil stick and pastel lend a sense of simplicity, sincerity and intimacy–imitating crayons and child’s play. While his works speak to his personal experience they also speak to the larger experience of intersectionality and Asian representation in modern culture. His paintings address how contemporary film and literature are reduced down to uniform colors when processed through consumer culture.

Representing Kim’s experience of various conflicts and collisions, his work sheds light on the beauty of this experience. While explosions represent confusion and failed alchemy, they also play a role in erasing – starting anew. Kim tries to provide a clue to solving various conflicts that exist in the contemporary world through the energy of the explosion. Through his paintings, he hopes to aid the resolution of internal conflicts and help the viewer to experience the sublime, majesty, and catharsis.
