“That’s The Neighbor, Always Dressing These Boulders In The Yard,” an exhibition of paintings brought together by Torey Thornton, opens June 27th at 76 Grand Street. Here, raw application of materials foregrounds a directness of hand and spirit. As the artists dress, knead, and layer their surfaces, visceral relationships between emotion, impulse, gesture, and texture are created.
There is a shared interest in grit, speed, rhythm, and energy of all sorts. Paint, glitter, velvet, wood, glass, string – and their allusions and effects - riff off of each other. These are paintings that exist outside of post-modern complications. Without visual tricks and dry formalism, they evoke the energies specific to each artist.
About the curator:
Torey Thornton (b. 1990) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Karma, New York and TORRI, Paris. Group exhibitions include 247365, Brooklyn, NY; Halsey McKay, East Hampton, NY; and Metropolitan Art Society, Beirut, Lebanon. A solo exhibition at OHWOW, Los Angeles will open in September 2014.
About the artists:
Brian Belott (b. 1973) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Recently, his work was presented in a solo exhibition at Zurcher Studio, New York and he curated “Draw Gym” at 247365, Brooklyn, NY.
Ted Gahl (b.1983) is an artist living and working in Connecticut. Gahl received his MFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 2010. In 2014 his work was presented in a solo exhibition at Dodge Gallery, New York.
Graham Hamilton lives and works in New York, NY. He received his BFA from NYU in 2011.
Yi-Hsuan Lin (b. 1985) is originally from Taiwan and now based in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In 2013, his work was presented in a solo exhibition at Galeria Logo, Sao Paolo.
Eric N. Mack (b.1987) lives and works in New York, NY and received his MFA from Yale University in 2012. In 2012, his work was included in “Fore” at The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY.
Chris Martin (b. 1954) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has exhibited extensively around the world including a solo exhibition last year at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam.
Odessa Straub (b.1989) lives and works in New York, NY and received her BFA from The Cooper Union in 2013. In 2013, her work was included in group exhibitions at the Bleecker Street Arts Club and the Cooper Gallery, both New York, NY.
