Daniel Heidkamp

Elevated States is Daniel Heidkamp’s fourth solo exhibition with Half Gallery. Elevated States includes new paintings which compare Germany’s mountainous landscape with the waterfalls and domes of Yosemite Valley, two places Heidkamp has visited this past year.

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the German state of Saxony are home to the mysterious Bastei Bridge. In Heidkamp’s painting Neurathen, the crumbling passages and rock stairwells are perched high above a ravine of twisting crags that jut upwards like fingers from an abyss. The surreal topography and misty sunlight has inspired many artists, most famously, as the backdrop of Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog.

Yosemite Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California provides an equally inspiring view. The valley and was an important cradle for early landscape artists, including German-born painter Albert Bierstadt.

Heidkamp’s practice has long included a continuing education in art history both in place and subject, whether on a road trip along the East Coast or the Barbizon area in France. The finished product results in paintings with a storied provenance albeit specialized and contemporary within Heidkamp’s lens.

In 2017 Daniel Heidkamp (b. 1980, Massachusetts), was part of the exhibition Talking Pictures at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He has also been in group exhibitions at Almine Rech Gallery, Karma and Loyal Gallery. In 2014, Heidkamp had a solo exhibition at White Columns, New York.
