Chase Wilson

Galerie Timonier is pleased to present Yellow 5, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Chase Wilson.

The exhibition takes its title from tartrazine—commonly known as Yellow 5—the color additive responsible for the electric hue of the high-octane soft drink Mountain Dew. Like Richard Hamiltonʼs famous 1954 collage, Just what is it that makes todayʼs homes so different, so appealing?, Chase Wilson turns his attention to an emblematically charged consumer good and asks what it reveals about the culture that produced it and the desire it engenders. The logo-rich 12-pack Mountain Dew carton becomes both subject and catalyst: a symbol loaded with history, political theater, and social identity. Loved and derided, Mountain Dew operates as a cultural signifier which, not surprisingly, has been recently embraced by politicians across party lines eager to project “everyman” authenticity. In this fertile ground—where social class, corporate branding, aspiration, and perception intersect—Wilson isolates, calibrates, and explodes the cartonʼs requisite colors and shapes; contours extend beyond their expected boundaries, shooting outward as vectors into space while fields of Pantone precision shift toward abstraction. Wilson posits a simple truth: that we live in world of cultural constructs and it is through observation that we come to understand them.
