Peter Sutherland

Peter Sutherland is a New York based artist working with painting, photography, sculpture and film to symbolize American culture. Focusing on analog photo manipulation and implementing his imagery with sculpture, Sutherland joins multiple outlets to produce customized raw objects in vignettes where American nature and traditional iconography bear the influence of eastern mysticism. Layered images printed on perforated vinyl reveal texture and meaning below the surface; cut rocks and water bottles become records of what has passed. One Bar of Service speaks of areas where these objects exist – the non-traditional, alternative living situations and environments found everywhere across the United States – environments that echo the simpler, more remote communities of the world he’s traveled. This is Sutherland’s second exhibition at Still House after completing the inaugural residency there in 2011.
