Nick Georgiou

Allouche Gallery is thrilled to present the forthcoming exhibition, Biblioscapes by artist Nick Georgiou.

Georgiou's innovative artistic process consists of collecting discarded pages sourced from dictionaries, gilded encyclopedias, textbooks, novels, journals, anthologies, and more. The materials are then reworked into pieces that evoke the timeless allure of classical mosaics and sculptural wall reliefs. In this setting, literary narratives transcend the boundaries of their original medium, offering new transportive, utopic tableaus.

The rich texture and depth of the stacked paper lends itself beautifully to the stories and subjects Georgiou depicts. Georgiou draws heavily from the urban desert landscape of Tucson, Arizona, where he works out of a historic warehouse built in the 1S00s along the Union Pacific Railway Line.

His new collection features a tapestry of subjects, including large portraits of fictional characters, emblems of the Zod iac, Greek-inspired female figures, the gallant St. George astride a horse, opulent bouquets within ornate vases, and more. Each piece contains otherworld ly, mythic qualities, that together transport viewers into what feels like an immersive western storybook. Through his work, Georgiou pays homage to the rich history of storytelling and the magical transformation of printed words into artworks.

In Biblioscapes we see how Georgiou's fascination lies in the threads that bind together the countless lives that have traversed the pages of these forgotten texts.

Nick Georgiou, who was born in Queens and now works in Tucson, Arizona, uses old newspapers and paperback books as his media. He has collaborated with brands like Hermes, for site specific installations including their flagship store windows on Madison Avenue in New York City, and Dolce & Gabbana for their Alta Gioielleria jewelry collection at the New York Public Library. Georgiou's work is in the permanent collections of The Washington Post Company, the Tucson Museum of Art, Oxford University Press, and more. He has shown in fairs such as Art Miami, boasts international exhibitions, and has been featured in publications such as Wired, Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz and Vogue magazine.
