Peter Opheim

The Hole is proud to present the second solo exhibition by New Mexico-based artist Peter Opheim. Cocoon, his debut show in 2024 was filled with luminous, sunny oil paintings in a million shades of yellow, tiny clay sculptures and woven wall hangings. His second show with us is Cave, a dark and stormy antithesis to the sunlight and warmth, the new paintings rendered in colorful and ever-deepinging blacks, the figures mysterious bordering on threatening. Instead of big-eyed clay creatures we have cracklingly burned ceramic beings stacked on salvaged wood. The shift is very visible, but more interestingly, what similarities exist? Are these the same beings in a changing world, or is this a discovery of a new population, a whole new region of the artist’s imagination?

Peter Opheim (b. 1961, Germany) has been working with The Hole since 2021 when we first debuted his paintings at Enter Art Fair in Copenhagen and then Art Cologne the following year. Opheim was recently featured in solo shows at Medel Gallery, Tokyo (2026) and PAHO Gallery, Hiroshima (2025). His art can be seen in several prominent public collections in the United States and around the globe, such as the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, New Mexico, as well as in private collections throughout China, the United Kingdom, Europe, and more.
