A Chelsea gallery walk

Chelsea has the largest concentration of galleries in New York. Most are in former garages and warehouses on the side streets between West 18th and West 28th Streets, west of Tenth Avenue, and the largest have several spaces on different streets. See every show on view in Chelsea today.

Getting there

The C and E trains stop at 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue, two long blocks east of the galleries. The 7 train at 34th Street–Hudson Yards is close to the northern end. The High Line runs above the western edge of the district, with stairs at several of the gallery streets, and is a pleasant way to move between them.

How to walk it

Galleries line both sides of each street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, so walk each block west on one side and back east on the other, then move up a street. The streets between West 19th and West 26th are the densest. Many buildings have galleries on upper floors too; check the lobby directory.

When to go

Tuesday to Saturday, from about 10am to 6pm. Most Chelsea galleries are closed on Sunday and Monday, and in July and August many open only on weekdays. Thursday evenings bring openings, especially in September and October.

How long to allow

Plan on three to four hours for the main blocks. Big solo shows at the largest galleries can take twenty minutes each; smaller galleries take five.
