Our picks

Karen Gunderson: Dark Waves Rising

Yancey Richardson, Chelsea · Through Dec 19

Horizonless seascapes and full-moon paintings in black and deep blue use layered pigments and meticulous brushwork to suggest moving light and depth. The seascapes draw in part on photographs Gunderson took during whale-watching trips off Cape Cod.

Wade Guyton: Sculpture

Matthew Marks, Chelsea · Through Jan 23

Wade Guyton’s newest work includes objects made from bronze, aluminum, steel, plaster, plywood, and carpeting. A group of recent paintings is also included in the exhibition.

Mildred Thompson: Cosmos Calling

Lelong & Co, Chelsea · Through Dec 19

Mildred Thompson’s Music of the Spheres paintings and accompanying electronic music compositions receive their first public showing together. Thompson created the compositions using electronics, toy instruments, and found objects.

Opening this week

Alexandre de Betak: Truss Light Sculptures 01

Salon 94 Design, Upper East Side · Opens today, Nov 5

In the first exhibition of sculpture by Alexandre de Betak, the trusses and stage lights behind live shows become the work itself. The bronze versions were hand-cast in a French foundry, with over twenty moulds required for a single piece.

Sandra Cinto: The Path to Stars

Tanya Bonakdar, Chelsea · Opens today, Nov 5

Sandra Cinto’s twelfth solo exhibition at the gallery includes paintings, wall paintings and folding screens. For more than three decades, Cinto has used drawing to create intricate images and immersive environments.

Chakaia Booker: Unpacked

David Nolan, Tribeca · Opens Friday, Nov 6

Chakaia Booker's collaged works on paper can hold several hundred individual pieces, and a single composition can take more than six months to complete. The Grave Yard Series of photographs is shown in New York in its entirety for the first time.

Meeson Pae: Seed Memory

Anat Ebgi, Chinatown · Opens Friday, Nov 6

Meeson Pae's works, produced over the past year, draw in part on visits to Jeju, South Korea, the island where the artist's family traces its origins. Sculptures in ceramic, cast metal and plaster accompany the paintings.

Last chance

Marco Maggi: Higher Perplexity

Bienvenu Steinberg & C, Tribeca · Last day Saturday, Nov 14

Abstract drawings and sculptures form linear pathways that recall circuit boards, aerial views, genetic engineering, and nervous systems. Maggi marks the silky smooth side of a roll of Reynolds kitchen foil with a 4H graphite pencil.

Annie Hémond Hotte: The Divine Comedy: Hell

Margot Samel, Tribeca · Last day Sunday, Nov 15

The exhibition, Annie Hémond Hotte's first solo show with the gallery, takes Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy as its point of departure. Each of Hémond Hotte's oil paintings is built over long stretches of time from many individual marks in underpainted layers.
