More from Leonardo Meoni on Gallop

Leonardo Meoni (b. 1994, Florence) is an Italian artist whose practice explores the relationship between material, light, and image-making. Often working with velvet, Meoni’s practice oscilates between painting, drawing, and sculpture.

His velvet works involve physically manipulating the surface of the velvet through gesture and control, creating images and textures that shift depending on the light and the viewer's position. This choreography of both the process and the viewer reveals the shadows and the boundaries that make up each fleeting image.

Outside of velvet, Meoni has worked with aluminum, bronze, and a range of mixed medium. Unconstrained in his practice, his work is rooted in his material approach. His obsession with the potential of surfaces and mediums creates an impetus to spend time with the works, to discover how each mark was made.

Meoni studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. He lives and works in Prato, Italy.
