A lot of what I do is painting again, something that is already on the painting, sometimes to make a form more opaque with multiple coats, but more importantly to change its color while revealing what it was, by painting up to but not over its edges. The brushstrokes or palette knife swipes that are there become objects that I can paint, like a stick or a chair. Sometimes, the heavy relief of the first marks on the painting create crests and ridges that can be painted under three-dimensionally. And because I am generally following a form’s contours, I am also painting an image of that form on top of itself. Most of my ideas about my paintings come back to these relationships between material object and perceivable image.
