More from Mark Manders on Gallop

Mark Manders will be the artist's first gallery show in the United States since representing the Netherlands at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. At Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, the artist will present a range of new sculptural works. Pushing the boundaries of cast bronze, Manders has masterfully created forms that appear to be made of other materials such as wet clay and wood, belying their solidity. Underscoring Manders' continued focus on materiality, some of the works engage his longstanding interest in the artist's studio as "a place of becoming" which has played a prominent role many of his installations. In this presentation, Manders recreates the studio in the downstairs gallery, placing within it a pair of large scale sculptures that seem to perennially occupy the impermanent space between creation and completion. In Manders' work, historical time is unidentifiable, rendering his figures simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar.

Mark Manders (b. 1968 in Volkel, the Netherlands) is currently included in the group exhibition A Brief History of the Future, Louvre, Paris through December 15, 2015. Recent significant solo presentations include Mark Manders: Cose in corso at Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy (2014) and Mark Manders at Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea in Santiago de Compostela, Spain (2014). A major American solo exhibition entitled Parallel, Occurrences/Documented Assignments opened at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles in 2010 and traveled to the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas through 2012. Manders currently lives and works in Ronse, Belgium.
