Cara Tomlinson & Patricia Paludanus

The BDDW Annex Gallery is pleased to announce Cave Light, an exhibition of work by Cara Tomlinson and Patricia Paludanus.

In Cave Light, Tomlinson and Paludanus’ work comes together to create an exhibition combining powerful uses of space and color.

Patricia Paludanus, a Dutch artist based in Amsterdam, studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Enschede, specializing in media art and photography. She has worked in many forms of media such as video, animation and sound, but in recent years rediscovered the humble tools of her early childhood when looking for a magic that seemed lost. She picked up an old set of colored pencils and has not put them down since. Paludanus describes using each color as similar to hearing a musical chord or tasting food - a physical sensation that connects to her memories and dreams - and applies pigments in such dense layers that color becomes an object. In her drawings, combining hard edges and stark shapes with nuanced grades of color and an almost velvet skin, she creates landscapes of a surreal nature that open doors to the unknown spaces within us.

Cara Tomlinson received her B.A. from Bennington College and her M.F.A. from the University of Oregon. She is an Oregon-based artist who addresses ideas of subjectivity, agency, and materiality through the language of painting. Understanding color to be both material and the effect of energy that transmits beyond its container, her paintings are meant to be lived with and experienced through changing light. Tomlinson’s most recent paintings and drawings focus on the human and animal body as a form and process, and the moveable boundaries of inside and outside. Her paintings feel like scenes or objects that you have seen before, but can't quite remember where. She creates the sense that you're peering into the inner workings of an object or moment.
