Opera Gallery New York is pleased to present The Summer Show, a presentation of select works from Opera Gallery’s collection that celebrates the season through color, form, and content. From the nuanced evocations of beach glass and the ocean present in Manolo Valdés’ monumental sculptures to an iconic carnival scene by Fernando Botero to a Joan Miro piece titled Woman, Bird, Stars II, ‘The Summer Show’ evokes the spontaneity and vibrance of summertime.
Marc Chagall’s mastery of color is demonstrated in Le Cirque Vert (1973-85), a painting that captures the whimsy and allure of the circus through emotional and poetic associations, and the vibrant yellow and black color palette of Yayoi Kusama’s I Carry on Living with the Pumpkins (2013) resembles a sunflower masquerading as a pumpkin, a symbol of the fall season that looms in the not so distant future.
“From Claude Monet’s impressionist representations of summer in full bloom, exploding with vitality and lushness, to pointalist masterworks by Georges Seurat depicting Parisians in repose on the banks of the River Seine to David Hockney’s depiction of a swimming pool in 1967’s iconic A Bigger Splash, summertime has long been a celebrated theme within art history and has provided inspiration for iconic works that celebrate the season” said Laura Adams Miller Opera Gallery New York’s Deputy Director and Curator of the show. “For this exhibition, we wanted to provide a colorful respite from the dog days of summer in New York, and take some creative liberties with the curation to provide a new spin on what summer feels like, from both a physical and more abstracted perspective.”
