Steve DiBenedetto & Jennifer Sirey

Steve DiBenedetto and Jennifer Sirey's two person exhibition Decoherence creates an intimate yet disorienting conversation across media. Sirey’s sculptures are uniquely crafted glass vitrines encasing strangely alien tableaux constructed from wax and bacteria. Each of her three pieces are positioned directly across from a corresponding painting by Steve DiBenedetto. His works are mostly abstract, but some elements veer toward an evocative figuration. All have a luminous quality and each is a different distinctive value range. One is almost black, another in high key chroma, and the third blanketed in a snowstorm white. Positioned across from Sirey’s vitrines, the muffled light of these intensely painted surfaces creates a striking visual conversation. The paintings can also be viewed through the vitrines' various portals and outcroppings, and the play of light back and forth between the two bodies of work is affecting and disorienting. The mood is primordial yet futuristic. Grappling with a timeless conundrum of physical interconnectivity, these works are as sublime as they are unsettling.
