More from Bendt Eyckermans on Gallop

Love Fulfilled is an exhibition of new works by Bendt Eyckermans – the artist’s second solo exhibition at Carlos/Ishikawa, London.

Eyckermans comes from five generations of sculptors. Sculptures loom in many of his paintings, at times overpowering and weighted by their own history–a reference to a complex personal history in relation to these objects, as well as colonial art history. The paintings are filled with contradictions and tensions: their spliced, ambiguous narratives resemble a Hitchcock film scene that could be describing a moment of tenderness or one of aggression, and hyperrealist bodies might end in a cartoonish ankle and foot. He will obsessively paint mundane details in his compositions, alongside figures who are all based on people close to the artist, who appear as simultaneously dejected or determined youth, trapped in a very self-consciously European existence (he states he wants the paintings to be “as Belgian as possible”).

Eyckermans’ first major solo museum show was recently held at S.M.A.K Ghent; and last year, Tank Museum staged a major solo presentation of his works in Shanghai.
