Michael Dayton Hermann

Hermann’s work has consistently shown a fascination with the re-presentation of familiar images and subjects through the filter of his unique personal language. With Stations, Hermann sustains broader questions about art, life and mortality by uniquely presenting personal and secular meditations on Jesus' suffering and death. Created using digitally collaged photographs printed on canvas and then meticulously hand-drawn in pastel pencils, the absurd and engaging compositions disarm the viewer. Personal and appropriated images ranging from news-clip photos to pop culture, are unexpectedly layered, juxtaposed and executed in a confident hand to present a well-worn subject as never seen before.

Michael Dayton Hermann creates work which confronts the familiar from an unexpected perspective. He has produced various guerilla exhibitions since 2002 and participated in numerous exhibitions at venues including envoy enterprises, Lombard Fried Gallery, WhiteBox, Exit Art and Longwood Art Gallery. Hermann received his MFA from Hunter College where he studied art theory with conceptual artist Robert Morris and executed his thesis under the advisement of Nari Ward. In 2016, he established Frances Saint Charles, a company focused on producing culturally relevant projects. Hermann has also been the Director of Licensing at The Andy Warhol Foundation since 2005, during which time he developed notable high-profile Warhol projects including collaborations with Dior, Comme des Garcons, Absolut, Supreme, and Perrier and conceived of an acclaimed monograph of Warhol’s Polaroids published by Taschen in 2015.
