Matchmaker

A person who feels the need to set people up with one another. Despite the fact that they may ruin friendships. Like filing stuff, organizing things into their proper places.

The artist’s recent show “Playlife” at Halle für Kunst Lüneburg introduced remakes of previous works, which continues in this exhibition. These paintings copy their original processes but zoom in on details so they are not exactly reproductions. It is the imperative to get organized and to perform organization that is the connection between the works. The original pieces were based on collaged photocopies from magazine ads for shoes; photographs by the artist of the interior design in a Glasgow restaurant; a photo from contact spreads by designer Terry Jones; and photographs by the artist of hired models walking through central London.

Alan Michael (b. 1967, Glasgow, Scotland) lives and works in London. Selected solo exhibitions include Halle für Kunst, Lüneburg (2021); High Art, Paris (2021); 3236RLS / Le Bourgeois, London (2019); Cell Project Space, London (2018); Jan Kaps, Cologne (2018); Tramway, Glasgow (2014); and Tate Britain, London (2008). He has participated in several group exhibitions including Galerie Francesca Pia, Zurich; Neuer Essener Kunstverein, Essen; Goyang Aram Nuri Arts Centre, South Korea; CAC Vilnius, Lithuania; Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham; Cubitt, London; and CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art, Bordeaux. This is the artist’s first exhibition at Jenny’s, New York.
