Paul Verdell

Jupiter is pleased to present Tabernacle, Paul Verdell's first solo exhibition in New York.

For his second solo show with Jupiter and first exhibition in New York, Paul Verdell takes inspiration from the word Tabernacle to direct his artistic practice. As he explains, “the show’s title came to me while driving back and forth on Charlevoix Street in Detroit, Michigan … I would see a small church with the word “Tabernacle” in it and it stuck in my mind.” Defined as “portable sanctuary,” the word permits Verdell to draw connections between religious worship and the faith of his own artistic process; the studio becomes a sanctuary, and his brushes, in turn, are converted into tools of devotion.

The new body of work in Tabernacle features a dynamic array of large- and small-scale paintings, each animated by the artist’s intuitive command of color and form. In Tabernacle, the layered, abstract compositions simmer with kinetic energy, their shared rhythm merging into a space that feels both sacred and alive.

Paul Verdell (b. 1991, Long Beach, California) received his BFA in 2018 from Bowling Green State University, Ohio. His work has since been featured in solo exhibitions at Library Street Collective, Detroit; Louis Buhl & Co, Detroit; GIFC Galleria Golsa, Oslo and Bode Projects, Belin. Verdell was an artist in residence at Bed-Stuy Art Residency in 2024 and Black Rock Senegal in 2022, and his works were subsequently featured in Black Rock Senegal’s Encouter as part of Dak’Art Biennial in 2024. He has taken part in many group exhibitions across North America, including Miles McEnery, New York; The Shepherd, Detroit, and False Cast Gallery, San Diego, amongst others. Paul Verdell currently lives and works in Detroit, Michigan.
