Enrico Castellani

Redefining Space

More from Enrico Castellani on Gallop

Lévy Gorvy presents Remembering Castellani: Redefining Space, an installation of seven works by Enrico Castellani that highlight the intensely varied and continually innovative nature of the artist’s oeuvre; the installation includes two works that have never been exhibited in the United States, Superficie rigata, 1961, and Superficie angolare rossa, 1965.

Establishing a practice suspended in the interstice between painting, sculpture, and architecture, Castellani’s six-decades-long career is most recognized for his Superficie works, wherein the surface of the canvas is activated by a network of ridges and divots. These works possess infinite variations in tone and shade, as any change in light is registered by the nuanced structure of the works’ topography, marking the passage of time while manifesting a sense of the eternal. The artist continued to produce new work until his death in December, leaving behind a monumental legacy that will be surpassed only by the memory of his abiding and impassioned endeavor to advance his artistic philosophy.
