Giona Maiarelli

The Day at Large features a series of newsprint collages from artist and graphic designer Giona Maiarelli. The the exhibition features six out of nearly one hundred works that were created with editions of The New York Times from 2016 to 2022. The series imagines a kind of afterlife for the news: once-urgent images and headlines break into fragments and float away into empty, horizonless landscapes.

The figures interact and fuse together, evoking new abstract forms and narratives. A conductor’s torso morphs into the upturned neck of a plastic swan; two grim giants lean over a bombed-out building complex. Geometric interlopers punctuate the spare compositions — stains of bold color, typographic scraps, the backgrounds of front-page photos. Reality is reshuffled and handed back to us, now flimsier and more expansive.

The show also includes four collages in a larger format from the artists’ new series titled Masters of Modern Architecture that take as subject and source material mid-century modernist American architecture.

Giona Maiarelli (b. 1960, Italy) lives and works in New York.

He is the creative director of Maiarelli Studio, a branding and communication studio. Raised in Udine, Italy, he has lived in Bologna, Paris and New York, working as art director in the fields of editorial design, advertising and branding.

His work has been published on international annuals and design magazines and won numerous awards. In 2021 he won the Designer of the Year Award for branding by Interior Design magazine.

He first exhibited with Galleria Arcipèlago in Udine, Italy in 2022.
