Our picks

Pope.L: Five Decades

Modern Art, West End · Through Nov 14

This survey spans Pope.L's painting, sculpture, drawing and installation, plus performance videos in a dedicated room. Times Square Crawl (1978), his first public street performance, finds him crawling West 42nd Street in a pinstripe suit with a bright yellow square sewn on the back.

Cady Noland

Gagosian, West End · Through Dec 19

Alongside an exhibition of new work, Noland's two-volume, 600-page book The Clip-On Method, published in 2021, is being relaunched. Arranged as a nonlinear archive, the book mixes photographs of her sculptures and installations with sociological, political and historical readings and her own writings.

Sturtevant: Eat the Outside to Light Up the Inside

Raven Row, East London · Through Dec 20

Drawn from across Sturtevant's career of repeating other artists' works by hand and from memory, the selection includes a gallery of Warhols and rarely seen Krazy Kat drawings. A rug she designed after a Keith Haring piece has been made especially for the show.

Alexios Seilopoulos: Omoetheria

Roman Road, East London · Through Dec 11

Photographs and a nine-minute film by Seilopoulos follow people and places under threat in Athens, where he returned after twenty years away. The series National Cruising comprises nine photographs of nocturnal encounters in the city's National Garden.

Opening this week

Nick Hallett: Voice Portraits

Soft Opening, East London · Opened Friday, Oct 30

Hallett's multichannel audio works portray four poets, including Wayne Koestenbaum and Penny Arcade, through their voices. Each composition draws on a recording session in which the poet warms up, reads, sings and makes casual conversation.

Pierre Soulages: Outrenoir

Timothy Taylor, West End · Opened Thursday, Nov 5

Nine black monochromes from Soulages's Outrenoir series span 2003 to 2021, the year before the painter died at 102. In Peinture 130 x 130 cm, 25 avril 2021, overlapping blade-like strokes leave paint heaped along their edges.

Last chance

Surface Tension: British Painting in the 1990s

Ben Brown Fine Arts, West End · Closed Oct 30

Paintings by Peter Doig, Hurvin Anderson, Chris Ofili, Gary Hume, Cecily Brown and Glenn Brown, six British artists whose practices took shape in 1990s London, make up this show. The gallery sets them against the YBA conceptual movement then dominating British art.

Gabriel Chaile: Volverme Pequeño para Habitar lo Grande

Cecilia Brunson Projects, South London · Last day Friday, Nov 6

Domestically scaled amphoras, a vessel once used in the ancient Mediterranean for storage and transport, each come with a support Chaile built. His materials include clay, mud and adobe, used to rework familiar forms through the material and cultural languages of Northeast Argentina's Indigenous communities.

Brook Hsu: Trout Fishing in America

Heidi, West End · Last day Saturday, Nov 7

Hsu's first UK solo show starts from the earliest postcard she sent her now fiancé, Leander, written on the back of a reproduction of Courbet's 1873 painting The Trout. He later answered with a postcard from Wyoming, where the couple now live.

Ha Chong-Hyun

Lisson, West End · Last day Saturday, Nov 7

Late-1960s works, woven painted strips from the Naissance series and a folded, rippled canvas, open this survey. For his Conjunction series, begun in the early 1970s, Ha pushes dense oil paint through coarse hemp canvas from the back.
