Serban Ionescu

Casbah is a site specific installation, continuing Serban Ionescu’s exploration of the drawn ‘line’ and its travels in scale, edge, color and material. The installation includes 1X porous wall - acting as a citadel in the core of the gallery, 1X chair - awaiting, welcoming you, 2X paintings - suspended and skewed are pending in the back of the gallery luring you in, several cut-out ‘flowers’ - peppered throughout the space activate nooks and corners. The fort it’s turned inside/out, no longer as an insular safe space but as fragmented self reliable components. They need to seek sanctuary within themselves away from these horrendous Hyena sounds.

Serban Ionescu (b.1984) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has taught Architecture design studios at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and started Off - a design studio focusing on furniture and interiors. His Architecture background and interest allows for the works to vary in medium, function and scale. His studio practice spans from drawing, painting, furniture, large scale installation and film. His migration from Romania to Queens at the age of 10, has infused his work with a skewed fascination for American Entertainment, Film, History, Manufactured Architectural Material, Graphic Design and Cartoons. Impulse, contrasts and contradictions fuel the work, between crassness and tact, the dull and the energetic and between rigor and accident.
