Cudelice Brazelton & Lili Huston-Herterich

MAW is pleased to present "Edge Up", a two person exhibition by Cudelice Brazelton and Lili Huston-Herterich. Through the use of textiles in combination with other media, both artists address the body and its natural brushings within altered spaces: constant changes in the body, fractured walls, peeling of the skin, pulling of the hair, piercings, and limb amputation. Edge Up sways, drapes, shifts and peels back layers.

Brazelton's object-based work and site specific drawings borrow the forms and imagery from haircut designs prominent in black and latino barbershop styling. In this body of work, drawing is compared to the use of line within a haircut. The body is hinted at within the work through the use of tracing, burning, and collaging surfaces and images, as if these symbols of flesh are spliced from the body that they came from.

Huston-Herterich's felt sculptures hang from ceiling to floor, embellished with ceramics either pressed between the artist's palm and surfaces from the neighborhood or around hair collected after getting a trim next door. Hanging on jewelry chain, the works trace the artist's body in a neighborhood subject to rapid change, of which she undoubtedly plays a role.

Cudelice Brazelton (b. 1991) is an artist who lives and works in Columbus, Ohio. His work revolves around black male identity and class through painting, sculpture, and video. He has been in various group exhibitions including Out/er.Space: Apprehensions of Nothingness at Chowaiki & Co. in Manhattan, Midwest Mindset at the UT Center for Visual Arts in Toledo, VOX X: Present Tense at Vox Populi in Philadelphia, Village of/ for things at In The Pines in Jackson Wyoming, and Impossible Geometries at Field Projects in New York City. He has attended Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, ACRE Residency and Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency. Brazelton is a co-founder of MINT Collective based in Columbus Ohio, and represented by D’agostino & Fiore in New York City.

Lili Huston-Herterich has a background in photography and a practice currently rooted in multidisciplinary installation. The artist routinely employs anti-hierarchical methods of art-making; integrating craft practices, staging participatory events, and using utilitarian objects to engage bodies that share the same space. Recent exhibitions include We of the Middling Sort at Zalucky Contemporary, Toronto (2017), Babble On at Rockaway Topless, NY (2016), Soft Rug & A Chirping Bird at AC Repair Co., Toronto (2016), and The Mouth that Holds the Tongue at The Power Plant, Toronto (2015). This summer she will participate in Access Gallery’s 23 Days At Sea residency on a freight ship, (travelling from Vancouver to Shanghai across the Pacific Ocean) and later this fall will commence graduate studies at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. She is represented by Zalucky Contemporary in Toronto.
